Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 21 at Sharyn's.  We're reading The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty. 

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

"Perks" generated a good discussion.  There were so many topics and themes to discuss that we had plenty of material to work with.  We discussed the family relationships, friendships, smoking and drug use, sex and sexuality.  In all, the group felt that these were believable and that the narrator's detached but interested voice helped to make the whole book ring true.

Our next title selection is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.  We skipped a December meeting and will get together in January at Mary Louise's place.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry generated an interesting discussion.  We discussed the relationships between the characters and the various symbolic meanings behind the plot and other elements in the book.  It was interesting to hear how different members came to realizations about the book and the plot at different points while reading it.

The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai

The Borrower generated an interesting discussion that centered around the realism/plausibility of the characters and the plot.

Privileges discussion results

The discussion of The Privileges was an interesting one for us. We spent a lot of time on the characters, their motivations, and what might become of them after the book closed.

Cherrie hosted.  Claire, Marlene, Mary Louise, Miky and Jim were there.

The next title is The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai.  We'll be meeting on Thursday, October 18, 7:30 p.m. at Jim's house.

Next title: Privileges by Jonathan Dee

Dinner at Matsuri was a hit - especially the surprise tempura cheesecake at the end.

At dinner, we selected a title for our next meeting. We'll be reading The Privileges by Jonathan Dee.  The meeting will be at Cherrie's at 7:30 on September 20.  According to our new format, we'll be meeting at that slightly later time.  Cherrie will host with appetizers, desserts and beverages. Marlene will do some research to guide the discussion.
